Collingwood
- The Suburb
The name for the area known as Collingwood came from
Lord Cuthbert Collinwood, an English Vice Admiral (1705-1810).
He had supreme command of the British Fleet after the
famous Horatio Nelson was mortally wounded in the Battle of Trafalgar -
1805
The land that would become the Municipality of
Collingwood was sold on 13 Feb 1839. There were 29 portions varying in
size from 12 to 28 acres.
The most valuable land sold which fronted the river was
sold between £5 & £7 7shillings per Acre.
Glassworks - The Land & Buildings
Early 1850's - Victoria's first glassworks
was established on Collingwood Flat in the vicinity of Glasshouse Rd.
1855 - The building had been taken over for use
as a candle factory.
1864 - The candle business closed in 1864 and
Hugh Thompson, a leather merchant used the factory as a tannery & boot
factory.
This use of the buildings continued until the late
1930's
1962 - Cadbury Fry Pascal builds 23-45 Gipps St
in front of the old Tannery / Boot Factory
2004 - In December ICR Property & Investment
Group purchase the property with the view to re-develop the site
2006 - One of the 2
older buildings at the rear of the site have been sold, the basement &
ground floor of main building is nearing completion
